Endless Silence of a Summer Night

The summer night was shifting into its second half, but the city refused to fall asleep. From the fountain, they headed towards the old city park, which was completely quiet at this hour. The unlit lamps on the side paths gave way to the moonlight, which filtered through the crowns of old linden trees and drew silver patterns on the ground.

They walked slowly, their shoes rustling quietly in the gravel. The air was still incredibly warm, but an occasional breeze brought the freshness of the coming morning.

“Do you remember our first meeting?” she asked softly, leaning her head against his shoulder as they walked.

“How could I forget,” he smiled and held her tighter around the shoulders. “It was exactly this kind of warm summer. Except back then, I was so nervous that I accidentally spilled coffee on your sneakers.”

“That’s true,” she laughed with a soft, ringing laugh that echoed through the empty park. “But that’s exactly why I remembered you.”

They stopped by a wooden bench under a massive oak tree. Instead of sitting down, they stood close to each other. All the rush, responsibilities, and stress of the past work week were definitively gone. In that moment, only the present existed.

He took her other hand in his and began to dance with her slowly on the spot, without any music. It was just a simple movement back and forth, guided by the rhythm of their own breath. She looked at him, and her eyes showed absolute trust and peace.

When the dance stopped, he drew her closer. Their lips met again in a long, deep kiss that spoke louder than a thousand words. It held all the tenderness they felt for each other, melted into one perfect Friday night. They knew they had two full days of the weekend ahead of them, but in this second, it was enough just to have each other.
